Craig Carnelia

1991 Gilman & Gonzalez-Falla Musical Theater Award recipient. Craig Carnelia has written the lyrics for the upcoming Broadway musical The Sweet Smell Of Success with music by Marvin Hamlisch and book by John Guare. The show, scheduled to open on Broadway in March, 2002 will star John Lithgow and be directed by Nicholas Hytner. Hamlisch and Carnelia will also be represented later in 2002 by Imaginary Friends , a play with song by Nora Ephron, opeing at the Old Globe in San Diego in September 2002, directed by Jack O'Brien.

As both composer and lyricist Craig wrote the score for the Broadway musical Is There Life After High School and contributed 4 songs to Studs Terkel's Working for which he received a TONY nomination. His upcoming musical Actor, Lawyer, Indian Chief will premiere in May, 2002 at the Goodspeed Opera House.

Off-Broadway, he wrote the music and lyrics for Three Postcards at Playwright's Horizons. Three Postcards (written with playwright Craig Lucas) was named one of the year's 10-Best in Time Magazine and is included in the Burns-Mantle anthology "Best Play of 1986-1987" as Best Musical of the Season. In 1994, Three Postcards received a second production Off-Broadway, this time at Circle Rep.

Also Off- Broadway, he has had a collection of songs titled Notes presented at the Manhattan Theatre Club and contributed single songs to The No-Frills Revue, Diamonds and A...My Name Is Still Alice .

Craig has won a number of major songwriting awards, among them the Johnny Mercer Award as "Emerging American Songwriter" and the pretigious Kleban Award for distinguished lyric writing.

There are 2 critically acclaimed compliation recordings of his songs Pictures In The Hall (performed by the composer and actress-singer Maureen Silliman) and Cast Of Thousands (performed by Eric Michael Gillet), and a published collection of his work The Songs of Craig Carnelia.
